                                                                              EAST-SLAVIC LANGUAGE FAMILY

The East-Slavic languages constitute one of three regional subgroups of Slavic languages, currently spoken in Eastern Europe. It is the group with the largest numbers of speakers, far outnumbering the Western and Southern Slavic groups. The existing East Slavic languages are Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian

All of these languages are today separate in their own right. In the Russian Empire the official view was that the Belarusian ("White Russian"), Ukrainian ("Little Russian"), and Russian ("Great Russian") languages were dialects of one common "Russian" language (the common languages of Eastern Slavic countries). In the course of the 20th century, "Great Russian" came to be known as Russian proper, "Little Russian" as Ukrainian and "White Russian" as Belarusian.

WHY TO LEARN RUSSIAN?

1. Russian is the most geographically widespread language of Eurasia and the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages. It is also the largest native language in Europe, with 144 million native speakers in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers and the 5th by total number of speakers. There are around 270 million Russian speakers in the world. Russian is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations

2. Business and career. Russia has an abundance of natural resources and raw materials including timber, fossil fuels: 1st largest producer of natural gas, oil – 2nd only to Saudi Arabia, 3rd largest mining coal and Russia has an estimated 40% of the world total reserves of natural gas… plus precious metals incl. diamonds, gold, copper, manganese, uranium, silver, graphite, and platinum. All of which makes for many business opportunities now and in the future.

In an economy where people are constantly competing for job opportunities and promotions, if you can go the extra mile to ensure a promotion by learning Russian, why not do do this?

3. Travel – Russia is the largest country in the World, at 10,610,037 square miles of land it is twice the size of the U.S.A or Canada. Now you can freely travel across this enormous country, see Lake Baikal – the oldest and deepest lake on the planet, gaze out of the windows of the Trans-Siberian Railway which connects Moscow with Vladivostok a mere 9,300 kilometres away. Without a doubt an ability to speak Russian would enhance travelling in Russia.

5. Culture - Russia possesses a wealth and history and knowledge that people choose to spend their entire lifetime studying and researching. If you are one of those people who chose to major or minor in Russian in college or you are just interested in learning more about this amazing country, why not also learn the language? Some of the world's most successful and prominent classics writers naturally wrote their original works in their native tongues, so think of how cool it would be to read Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky in Russian - exactly how they intended it to be read!

7. Relationship. Whether you would like to date a Russian woman or already have a relationship, it is worth to learn Russian in order to enhance mutual understanding and cope with the cultural differences. Your lady is definitely going to appreciate when you can express your feelings in her native language.

WHY TO LEARN UKRAINIAN?

1. Business. Studying Ukrainian has never been as attractive and actual as now. The rise of national patriotism and appreciation of own culture and traditions has led to increased usage of Ukrainian language. If you are planning to set up a business in Central and/or Western Ukraine than it is definitely advisable to choose for Ukrainian.

2. Communication with a Ukrainian lady or with Ukrainian friends always goes smoother when you speak their mother tongue.

3. Culture and travelling. Ukrainian language heavily dominates in Western Ukraine, while Western Ukraine itself is the region with the highest concentration of genuine Ukrainian culture. People speak pure Ukrainian in those regions, thus by speaking it you are demonstrating support for Ukrainian culture and this helps to establish a close and more personal connection to locals.

To put it simple: a foreigner in Western Ukraine, speaking Russian is ok for information exchange, but speaking Ukrainian gives locals a feeling of pleasant surprise and you certainly get warm smiles and sincere emotions in response. Oh, and you get a response in Ukrainian anyway (if not in English), so at least basic understanding skill would avail.
